Drift HD 170 Video Camera ReviewThe new Drift HD170 offers very good quality 1080p HD video and a rugged form factor designed for outdoor use.It is definitely the easiest to use helmet video camera we’ve tried and the live view comes in very handy.Soon after the was published on webBikeWorld, Drift released the HD version we had been wishing for.Fortunately, very little has changed in the excellent Drift software and hardware, which makes the task of writing this review of the HD 170 version a lot easier! Any price and availability information displayed on at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of this product. The HD 170 includes the same selection of mounting accessories that are included the X170. Mounting is the weak point for all of the motorcycle helmet video cameras we’ve tried; we just haven’t found the “perfect” helmet mounting system yet.The camera mounted fine on an HJC AC-12 Carbon, but not on the Nolan N90 or Icon Variant (reviews in process). There simply is no universal helmet mount that will work on all types of helmets, one of the problems with video cameras. The HD 170 is much easier to mount on top of a helmet than the GoPro HD, due to the streamlined shape of the Drift.

The live view, hidden microphone and speaker and the remote control are a real bonus. The Drift HD 170 will be released in August, so hurry up and get your name on the waiting list!More web BikeWorld:▪▪. From “K.D.” (July 2011): “I purchased my Drift HD170 at Amazon in June 2011. Prices are fluctuating a bit, since I was able to get it for $244.78. It’s at that price today, but frequently jumps to $349.99.I had a GoPro sitting in my cart for months on Amazon, waiting for the price to come down, but decided on the Drift after reading this review and considering the price differential. WebBikeWorld hasn’t steered me wrong yet, and I’m still in that camp.I love it – mostly.
The positives far outweigh the negatives, but I do wish I had considered the negatives before forking over the dough, since I probably would have waited for the industry to fix what I think are ridiculously obvious oversights in design.I’m with “O.R.” (comment below) in my thinking that the manufacturers of action cameras in general are way behind the curve in designing in simple, usability-based features into the firmware and hardware of these cameras. If only Canon, Panasonic or Sony would go after this market – something tells me they’d have a slam-dunk product out by the second generation at the latest. The resulting videos from the Drift are superb – but you nailed it on the over-exposure note – the default setting was far too over-exposed on my first long test; a ride on a bright, sunny day on Bear Notch Road in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In and out of the shade caused several instances of seconds-long washouts while the camera adjusted to the changing light. As an aside: Bear Notch Road is a spectacular ride, one of the nicest 15-minutes you’ll spend riding the White Mountains.
It’s closed in the winter, so take advantage when it’s open.
Action cameras generally follow one of two designs, box or bullet, but the small Stealth 2 is a mixture of the two. It looks very similar to the larger Drift Ghost-S with the same long rectangular shape, twist lock back, screen on top and rotating front lens element. This design made the Ghost-S exceptionally easy to mount, but the size and weight of the Ghost-S can be an issue, but while the Stealth 2 looks similar it's 40% lighter and 50% smaller.Physical appearance is where the similarities end because the Stealth films at 1080p at just 30fps compared with 60fps on the Ghost-S. The screen on top is just for navigating through menus rather than offering Live View, the battery is internal and it requires a waterproof housing if you want to venture into water.
There are also a few differences with the way the Stealth works when it's controlled by the mobile app.For the most part, though, the Stealth 2 is still very much part of the same 'get out there' action-ready family, despite its differences with Ghost-S. Mount optionsAn action camera's mount is always an important aspect of any system and while the GoPro mount is at present by far the most popular, Drift has been around for a few years too, so there's a good selection of bike, chest to helmet mounts out there.
Prices are very competitive and the mount quality is very high. The mount itself is a simple compression clip – you just slot it in and it's attached – yet despite this simplicity it holds the camera nice and firm with no play. Which is important in order to avoid vibration when attached to moving vehicles or people. This design also makes it easy to remove the camera quickly just by pinching the release tabs, so there are no fiddly knobs or bolts to undo. The compression clip itself fits to the bottom of the camera casing and can be removed to reveal a standard 1/4-inch thread, meaning that the Stealth is able to mount straight on to a tripod without the need for any additional accessories. Underneath the compression clip is a standard 1/4-inch tripod socket.
Modes and settingsSettings and start/stop recording are all set through the three buttons on the side, with the illuminated LCD on top letting you know where you are and what settings you've selected. The mode button enables you to cycle through the modes, which include movie, stills, time lapse and burst and also give access to the settings.

There's also a handy car DVR mode which can be activated in the settings. Once the Stealth is on, the power button doubles as 'select' and the middle button enables you to scroll through the settings. All areas of the interface are well thought out and finding the settings that you want to adjust is all relatively easily.
